Our Workflow
Concept phase
In the concept phase we do an analysis of your concept or help you create a virtual reality concept based on your brilliant idea. Analysis is important to determine production costs. A virtual reality project can be divided the following production area’s :
The Virtual Environment
The virtual environment is the 3D virtual world where your virtual visitors will experience VR. Everything you want your visitors to see in this world has to be assembled from 3D models. These 3D models can often be acquired at low cost from sites like http://www.turbosquid.com or can be modeled specifically, making them unique, for the project. You can probably imagine that custom modeling compared to acquisition is in a higher price range due to the production time involved.
(AI) Behavior
All kinds of elements in your virtual reality experience will have to display behavior of some kind. This can range from a clock that will display the actual time , to a bird flying by, to even more intelligent behavior (AI – Artificial Intelligence) that virtual characters or creatures will display. Could even be the case that some have to react on certain viewer actions. Certain Animations that need to be activated on specific elements need to be motion captured or acquired using services like http://mixamo.com from Adobe.
User Interaction
In virtual story telling or a virtual educational, most of the time, the viewer will just be passively letting himself being totally be immersed into a virtual ride. In an interactive virtual reality experience like a game or a virtual training you will want an active viewer. User interaction need to be programmed, you can think of actions like selecting by looking, using certain input controllers, supporting multiple users in one virtual environment (Multiplayer) and handling the application’s graphical user interface (UI).
Management and monitoring
In certain virtual reality experiences you would like to be able to change certain application parameters that will determine certain behavior or influence user interaction. If you desire this we need to setup some management system for you so you can manage your application your self without the need of additional programming. Also, in some cases, you would want to monitor a virtual experience on a second monitor or on a tablet and adjust the experience using your management console on the fly. Data from the experience could be exported to excel sheets or graphical chats for analysis purposes.
At the end of the concept phase we will be able to provide an offer based on the production need of your concept. We usually format this using optional, sometimes phased, items. This so you can determine the items for production and fit the project to your budget.
Production phase
When we go in production we usually create a http://basecamp.com project so we can communicate with you online during the time span of the project. We highly valuate transparent and regular communication.
We will start assembling the world using the acquired or custom modeled 3d objects and we will optimize them for performance. Optimization is important because of the high framerate (75fps) demands of modern HMD’s like Oculus Rift to support smooth visual experiences. In addition to optimization, we will create the right PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials for all world elements to create realistic visuals and improve immersion. We use Allegorithmic’s Substance Designer and Substance Painter in our workflow to produce our PBR materials. At this stage, you will, already be able to experience the early virtual reality environment of your project, but probably without much activity and behavior.
After the world is in place, we will start the C# coding of behavior using our in-house ‘Firefly’ virtual reality ride engine (coded in Unity3D) and create specific project related scripts regarding user interaction, user interface, management and monitoring. During this stage your virtual reality experience will gradually take shape and grow into the end result: a fantastic virtual reality experience!
We always divide our production phase into milestones and use those milestones to provide intermediate versions of the virtual reality experience up to the final delivery so you can follow the development process and can give us your feedback.
Maintenance phase
In the maintenance phase we will solve bugs that surface and give advise for improvements. If there are new technical developments we will also propose changes or additions that will improve and add value to your virtual experience. If you would like to add new functionality we will be ready to build a new or expand on the original concept. Even after the official maintenance phase we will stay active monitoring VR technologies and give you heads-up what these can do for your virtual reality project.
Our Services
Interactive Virtual Reality Content Development
With our own Firefly Engine, written in Unity3D, we create interactive virtual reality content and can bring your VR project to the Oculus Rift or other HMD’s.
Spherical Virtual Reality Cinematics
Each virtual reality experience we build, we can extend with ‘scripting’, play a pre-determined scenario and record this as a 360 degrees spherical monoscopic or stereoscopic CGI video.
Virtual Reality Consultancy
Let us work with your development team to optimize your VR development process and create your virtual reality experiences for the Oculus Rift and other HMD’s.
